Victorian table braiding, also known as “table work” was a popular decorative craft in the 19th century. It involves weaving intricate braids and cords using hair and is worked on a small table with the help of weighted bobbins. These braids were commonly used as memorial jewellery and keepsakes during the Victorian era. The technique requires patience and dexterity, with patterns ranging from simple plaits to elaborate interwoven designs. Table braiding involves a special wooden braiding table with a hole in the center. The hair is attached to weighted bobbins, which are moved in a rhythmic sequence to interlace the fibers into intricate designs. This technique was similar to Japanese Kumihimo braiding, though the patterns do differ to the Victorian ones.
